Stockbroker takes his itchy hand as a sign to play lottery — and wins big in Maryland
A stockbroker’s intuition — plus a little superstition — won him a substantial lottery prize in Maryland, officials said.
He told lottery officials he only buys lottery tickets when “something tells him to,” and that the inspiration typically arrives in his dreams.
Until the lucky feeling struck him in a different way one day — physically, officials said in a March 21 news release.
“I was getting some gas at a 7-Eleven in Burtonsville,” he told officials. “All of a sudden I noticed that my hand was itchy, which got me thinking.”
He had heard about an old superstition suggesting an itchy hand leads to a financial windfall and wondered if it was a sign, officials said.
“I looked at the store and saw that they sold Lottery tickets — that’s all I needed,” he said.
So he went inside and stuck to a tried-and-true strategy of his using variations of family birthdates on at least five tickets, officials said.
“I’ve won enough times that when I get that feeling, I double down,” he said.
He bought five $1 straight Pick 5 tickets for the March 6 midday and evening drawings with the number combination 32681, officials said.
It paid off big time. Each of the five tickets won $50,000 — for a $250,000 total prize.
“I sort of expected to win something, but when I saw that all the numbers were there, it hit me like a ton of bricks,” he said. “$250,000 doesn’t drop in your lap every day.”
Fittingly, the stockbroker plans to invest his prize.
Burtonsville is about a 20-mile drive north of Washington, D.C.
