A Baltimore woman was battling a sinus infection when she headed to the grocery store to pick up smoothie ingredients — and then her sick day took a life-changing turn, officials in Maryland said.

The woman won $5 million off a $50 scratch-off ticket, Maryland Lottery officials said in an April 11 news release.

The woman works for the federal government, and she was home sick April 10 “when she decided a smoothie may help her ailments,” lottery officials said. While at a Safeway in Baltimore to get the fixings, she used winnings from a Keno ticket to buy more lottery tickets, including her winning $5,000,000 Cash scratch-off, lottery officials said.

She used the Lottery app to scan her tickets once she got home, according to lottery officials.

The woman “could not believe her eyes” when she saw the big win, lottery officials said.

“I saw the message and the confetti pop up, but I couldn’t tell if it was $5,000 or $5 million,” the woman said, per the release. “I kept scanning it over and over, but I still couldn’t believe it.”

The woman, who is mom to a son, said she’ll invest and buy a house with the windfall, lottery officials said. She also “plans to create generational wealth for her family,” according to lottery officials.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
