As a man was celebrating Easter Sunday with family, he was just about ready “to fire up the grill.”

But there was one problem: “He was out of propane,” Maryland Lottery officials said in an April 22 news release.

The Charles County man made his way to a La Plata store, a trip that led him to a big lottery win.

While he was at the store, the man remembered “he had two old scratch-offs in his pocket, he checked them,” lottery officials said.

After learning they weren’t winners, he decided to try his luck and buy another ticket: a Monopoly X50 scratch-off, lottery officials said.

Hours later, as the man was “relaxing on the couch,” he scratched his ticket and learned he won a $50,000 prize, lottery officials said.

“I screamed ‘No way!’ at the top of my lungs,” he told lottery officials.

Concerned, his wife rushed over, lottery officials said.

Soon, after they confirmed the win using the lottery app, she joined “him in shock and celebration,” lottery officials said.

As the two “danced with joy,” their children soon followed suit, lottery officials said.

“We’re still in shock,” he said in the release.

The winner told lottery officials he plans to spend his prize on home renovations and take his wife on a vacation.

La Plata is about a 65-mile drive southwest from Baltimore.
