Couple misses $10 million jackpot by one number, but still wins big in Maryland
Loyal Powerball players won big in Maryland, thanks to an extra $1 they spent to increase their chances of winning, officials said.
The couple matched four out of five numbers along with the Powerball for a $50,000 prize in the Double Play drawing, a second drawing 30 minutes after each Powerball drawing, lottery officials said in an April 25 news release.
“For an extra $1, why not,” the military officer said in the release. “It paid off for us.”
The couple missed winning the $10 million jackpot by only one number, officials said.
“The winning Double Play numbers from the Monday, April 21 drawing were 18, 23, 34, 35 and 67; the Powerball was 13,” officials said in the release. “Our winner had 37 instead of 35 and just missed out on the top Double Play prize.”
Still, the $50,000 prize was no small victory for the couple.
“This is the first time in 30 years of playing Powerball that we have won this much,” the player said.
The travel-loving couple said they’ll put their winnings in the bank for now, but hope to use it to someday travel the world, officials said.
