California Gov. Gavin Newsom is holding a daily coronavirus news conference about the state’s response to COVID-19 at noon on Tuesday.

Earlier Tuesday, Newsom’s Department of Finance released a letter announcing the first shipment of masks from its nearly $1 billion deal with a Chinese manufacturer “is underway,” according to a letter just released by Newsom’s Department of Finance.

Once California receives the masks, it will need to pay the next installment of $104.7 million by the end of the week, according to the letter, which Finance Department spokesman H.D. Palmer said was sent to lawmakers late Monday night. The state already paid $495 million up front for the masks.

The total contract is for $990 million, the administration says. The Newsom administration has not yet released the contract publicly, and has denied requests from lawmakers to review it. The administration has said that releasing details about the contract could jeopardize the mask shipments.

On Tuesday afternoon after the news conference, Newsom will host a discussion with workers and employers about the coronavirus pandemic and economic recovery. Reporters will be able to stream the meeting, according to Newsom’s office.
