CHP detains man near Capitol whose truck has been spotted outside Gavin Newsom’s home

California Highway Patrol officers detained a man near the Capitol on Thursday whose vehicle has been spotted outside Gov. Gavin Newsom’s home in recent weeks, according to officers on the scene, bystander video and video and photos taken by Bee reporters.

A Bee reporter at the scene observed Newsom’s address written on the truck’s back window.

Another window had the words ”Bring it! Boogaloo!,” a term for an anti-government movement that has been connected to white supremacist groups and promoted violent messages. The truck also said “F--- Antifa,” a reference to far-left militant groups that confront neo-Nazis and white supremacists at demonstrations.

On May 19 and June 3, Bee journalists spotted the vehicle, a red Ford Explorer, outside Newsom’s home in Fair Oaks surrounded by protest signs under the watchful eye of the governor’s security detail. On Wednesday, the vehicle and its belongings had moved a block away from Newsom’s gates onto an adjacent street.

On Thursday afternoon, the truck was parked outside the Stanley Mosk Library and Courts Building.

Bystander videos posted on Facebook show what appear to be an ax and gun cases on the ground next to the truck, apparently unloaded by officers.

Officers found weapons in his truck, an officer on the scene who declined to give his name told The Bee.

An officer captured on video said the man they had detained was not being arrested. It is unclear why he was detained or whether he has been accused of any wrongdoing.

California Highway Patrol did not return requests for more information about the incident. Newsom’s office also did not return requests for comment.

The incident occurred during a week of protests in Sacramento and across the country sparked by the police killing of George Floyd, a black man who died in Minneapolis last week. Many of the demonstrations in Sacramento have occurred near the Capitol.
