In Wednesday’s press briefing, Newsom said that California — which he said has been working since March to expand hospital capacity — has the capacity to treat 50,000 COVID-19 patients. But he noted that hospital capacity varies by region. Yolo County — which yesterday joined the governor’s watch list of 26 total counties that have to close most indoor businesses for at least three weeks — has 0% of staffed ICU beds available.

California has reported over nearly 290,000 cases as of Tuesday, including nearly 11,700 new infections on July 7. Newsom on Wednesday attributed some of that surge to backlogged cases in Los Angeles County.
