When is the last day to register to vote in California? See the deadline for 2024 election

The presidential election is nearing — and the deadline to register to vote is just a few days away.

On Tuesday, Nov. 5, California voters will help choose the next president and vice president of the United States.

They’ll also vote on candidates for U.S. senators and representatives as well as a number of ballot propositions.

Here’s how make sure your vote is counted on Election Day.

When is the last day to register to vote?

The last day to register to vote for the upcoming general election is Monday, Oct. 21.

According to the California Secretary of State’s website, the voter registration deadline for any election is 15 days before Election Day.

How do I register to vote in California?

California residents can register to vote online.

The application is available in several languages, including English, Spanish, Chinese and Vietnamese.

Who is eligible to get a ballot in California?

To be eligible to vote in California, you must be:

  • A United States citizen
  • A California resident
  • At least 18 years old on Election Day
  • Currently not serving time in a state or federal prison for a felony conviction
  • Currently not found mentally incompetent by a court ruling

Am I already a registered voter?

You can check your voter registration status online.

On the same website, you can also check where you can vote, your party preference and information for upcoming local and state elections.

Can voter registration expire?

Voter registration does not expire, but it can be canceled, according to Ken Casparis with the Sacramento County Voter Registration and Elections office.

Canceled registration occurs when your local county receives the following:

  • A signed written request from the voter.
  • Notification that the mental incompetency of the voter is legally established.
  • Proof that the voter is presently imprisoned for the conviction of a felony.
  • Official notification that the voter is registered to vote in another state.
  • Notification that the voter is deceased.

Voters can also be given “inactive” status, Casparis told The Sacramento Bee.

Inactive voters are still registered voters. However, these individuals are not mailed voting materials.

You may be considered an inactive voter if you’ve moved and did not confirm your new address.

Typically, you’ll be mailed a request to confirm your residency. If you return the card you receive, you’ll be reactivated.

However, if you’ve been inactive for two federal general elections since receiving an address confirmation notice and have not responded, Casparis said, your registration will be canceled.
