Fiery crash on Interstate 80 overpass in Davis closes major roadway and ramps
A busy Davis roadway and its ramps to Interstate 80 were closed Monday morning due to a crash that sent a driver to a hospital with serious injuries, police said.
A vehicle heading southbound on Mace Boulevard near the I-80 overpass collided with a raised segment of concrete at the southwest corner of the westbound freeway on-ramp around 1 a.m., the Davis Police Department said in a news release.
“The vehicle veered to the left crossing six traffic lanes and then collided with the concrete wall and fence on the east side of the Mace overpass” after the initial collision, the news release said.
The vehicle then started to catch fire. Several bystanders helped pull the driver out, police said.
“The driver was transported to the UC Davis Medical Center in what appears to be critical condition,” Davis police wrote.
The driver was the only occupant of the vehicle, and no other vehicles were involved.
Northbound and southbound Mace Boulevard remained shut down to traffic “until further notice,” along with the I-80 on- and off-ramps at Mace in each direction, the Davis Police Department said in a text message alert sent just after 7:15 a.m.
Drivers are asked to avoid the area.
Law enforcement officers last Thursday arrested an Elk Grove man after a crash and shooting in the same area, which also closed the I-80 ramps at Mace Boulevard during morning commute hours.
