I-5 work: What to expect as Caltrans’ weekend closures return to downtown Sacramento

Road work

Plan your commute accordingly this weekend because several on-ramps and highway lanes on Interstate 5 in downtown Sacramento are closing from Friday to Monday.

As a part of FixSac5, the Interstate 5 Corridor Enhancement Project, construction crews will be working on demolition, drilling, pouring concrete and striping on northbound I-5, according to Caltrans.

From 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, expect closures at:

  • Westbound Highway 50 (W-X freeway) to northbound I-5 connector and auxiliary (No. 4) lane
  • P Street on-ramp to northbound I-5
  • W Street on-ramp to northbound I-5
  • J Street off-ramp of Northbound I-5
  • 15th Street on-ramp to westbound Highway 50

Residents can take the following detours:

  • From westbound Highway 50 to northbound I-5, continue westbound on Highway 50 (over the Sacramento River) keep right and take the eastbound I-80 exit.
  • Access from northbound I-5 to J Street off-ramp, use the Q street off-ramp. Motorists can also usethe Richards Boulevard exit and enter onto southbound I-5 to reach the J Street off-ramp.

The Interstate 80 is also an alternate route, according to the project’s website.

Motorists using Interstate 5 through downtown should expect delays. The California Highway Patrol will be patrolling the area, making sure motorists are following the temporary speed limit of 55 mph.
