Fog, rain, snow: Another weekend storm rolls into Sacramento Valley, Sierra mountains
Another round of thick fog is impacting the Sacramento area Friday morning, with visibility of less than a quarter-mile possible for much of the Central Valley.
The National Weather Service has a dense fog advisory in effect through 10 a.m. for the southern Sacramento Valley and northern San Joaquin Valley.
Light rain also began to fall in Sacramento. Rain could continue into the afternoon and evening, but less than quarter-inch of precipitation is expected near the capital, according to the latest weather service forecast. The city should see a high near 58 degrees and a nighttime low of about 47.
Similar conditions are expected Saturday, and rain is expected to stop by Sunday, but overnight temperatures will drop to near-freezing levels by the end of the weekend. Forecasts show a low of 39 degrees Saturday night and 35 Sunday and Monday.
Snow returns to the Sierra
Another weekend, another round of snow in the Sierra Nevada range. The storm system hitting interior Northern California this weekend, bringing light to moderate rain across the valley, is set to drop moderate snowfall in the mountains.
The weather service has issued a winter weather advisory from noon Friday to 4 a.m. Sunday, warning that snow levels could drop from 6,500 feet Friday to 4,000 feet by Saturday night.
Between 10 and 15 inches of snow is expected to fall throughout most of the mountains, up to 2 feet locally. Up to 5 inches could fall below elevations of 5,000 feet.
With those conditions, snow accumulation and chain controls are likely along mountain passes. Conditions are not expected to be as treacherous as recent weekend storms - including one right before Thanksgiving, in which the weather service advised warned that mountain travel could be impossible amid near-whiteout conditions - but forecasters are still urging caution for anyone traveling through snow this weekend.
Snowfall should end by Sunday, though cold temperatures will remain, including a high of 33 degrees and low of 22 near South Lake Tahoe, forecasts show.
