Dense fog rolls into Sacramento, expected to stay through morning commute hours
Dense fog is blanketing the Sacramento area Tuesday morning, creating possible morning rush-hour delays as visibility is low on most local freeways.
The National Weather Service says morning fog across the northern San Joaquin Valley and southern Sacramento Valley has dropped visibility below a quarter-mile for a large portion of each region. Traffic delays are anticipated for commuters, and a dense fog advisory is in place through 10 a.m., the NWS Sacramento office said in a tweet.
As of about 6:30 a.m., heavy fog could be seen along Highway 50, Interstate 80 west of Sacramento, Highway 99 and Interstate 5 south of the capital. Visibility appeared better along I-80 in north Sacramento County, near North Highlands and Citrus Heights, as seen on Caltrans traffic cameras.
The fog had also descended onto city streets, with blocks of downtown and midtown Sacramento shrouded in the low-lying water vapor.
Cold and a little wet the rest of the week
Sacramento was just 38 degrees as of 6:30 a.m., but will warm to the upper 50s by the afternoon as the sun peeks through, according to NWS forecasts.
Tuesday night will see about a 30 percent chance of showers. Light rain is likely Wednesday night, Thursday during the day and Friday night, forecasts show.
High temperatures will stay in the 50s, with overnight lows between the mid-30s and low 40s, through Friday.
