Very dense fog reduces visibility, slows Sacramento traffic Friday morning

Very dense fog has descended upon parts of the Sacramento region early Friday, creating some delays for commuters during morning rush hour.

The National Weather Service tweeted that fog has “enveloped portions of the Central Valley early this morning, particularly in the #Sacramento and #Modesto area.” Visibility of less than a quarter-mile, with pockets near zero visibility, has been observed.

Caltrans traffic cameras showed the heaviest fog along Interstate 5 south of downtown Sacramento, and on Interstate 80 in West Sacramento and near the airport. Less dense fog could be seen along I-80 north of Sacramento and on Highway 50 east of the capital, near Rancho Cordova.

As of 8 a.m., the California Highway Patrol reported a collision blocking the slow lane of southbound Capital City Freeway near El Camino Avenue, backing up traffic up to about Auburn Boulevard. Traffic has also proceeded slowly on southbound I-5 at West El Camino Avenue throughout the morning.

A dense fog advisory issued by the NWS is set to expire at 10 a.m., with conditions expected to improve by about then.

It was a frigid 36 degrees in Sacramento as of 7 a.m.
