Here’s how much snow fell near Tahoe, as brief Northern California storm dwindles

It was no blizzard, but a healthy amount of snow fell on the Sierra Nevada mountains during this week’s brief storm passing through Northern California.

Around 6 inches dropped on Palisades Tahoe, Sugar Bowl and Bear Valley ski resorts between Monday and Tuesday mornings, the National Weather Service’s Sacramento office said in a social media post. In the southern Sierra, Mammoth Mountain got about 9 inches.

Meanwhile, moderate rain totals fell in the Sacramento Valley. The weather service reports that about a quarter-inch fell Monday in Sacramento. More rain fell overnight and into the morning, before showers stopped around midday.

Gusty winds were continuing in the afternoon, with the weather service reporting peak gusts around the Sacramento region between 30 mph and 35 mph.

This week’s totals don’t compare to those of the powerful late October storms, which set a single-day rain record in Sacramento while blanketing the Sierra range with multiple feet of snow.

Still, rain and snow remain a welcome sight amid California’s severe drought, which water and weather experts say will take sustained wet weather to snap.

California’s forecast for rest of week

After Tuesday’s showers, no precipitation is expected through at least the weekend for Northern California, weather service forecasts show, and temperatures may warm up by about 10 degrees.

Near Sacramento, high temperatures in the low 60s Tuesday and Wednesday will rise to the upper 60s or low 70s by Thursday, Friday and the weekend, forecasts show. Overnight lows will stay around 50 degrees.

The weather service also advises that patchy morning or overnight fog is expected most of this week near Sacramento. Drivers should use caution.
