Thousands lose power in Sacramento and Davis areas as gusts top 40 mph
A few thousand homes and businesses lost power Tuesday across California’s capital region as powerful wind gusts hit the Sacramento Valley.
The Pacific Gas and Electric Co. online outage map as of 1:45 p.m. showed about 2,900 customers have been without power in Davis since about 11:30 a.m. as well as nearly 400 in the Winters area since 12:30 p.m. No estimated times for restoration were available.
Sacramento Municipal Utility District reported about 450 customers without power in Sacramento County early Tuesday afternoon, with a large majority of them in the Arden Arcade and Carmichael areas.
SMUD said power had been restored to about 370 of those customers by 1:45 p.m., with only a few dozen homes and businesses still in the dark around Carmichael.
The outages come as intense northern winds blow in the area. The National Weather Service at 1 p.m. reported as high as of 44 mph have been reported at Sacramento International Airport and up to 41 mph in Davis, exceeding forecast expectations by about 10 mph.
The weather service has a wind advisory in place for the valley, the western slope of the Sierra Nevada mountains and portions of the Bay Area through 6 p.m. Wednesday.
