Rain will finally, probably fall this week in Sacramento. Here’s when and how much

weather update

After more than two months and a few forecast false alarms, Sacramento’s long dry streak will likely come to an end early this week.

The National Weather Service has predicted an 80% chance of rain Monday night and 70% Tuesday morning, forecasts showed as of Monday morning.

The weather service’s Sacramento office in a social media post Sunday gave downtown Sacramento a 92% chance of receiving measurable rain during the two-day system.

Between a quarter-inch and half-inch is expected over those two days, with the heaviest bout expected Tuesday morning, according to the weather service.

Sacramento last recorded measurable precipitation Jan. 7, getting just 0.04 inches.

That means Sunday marked 65 days without measurable rainfall, a record-setting streak during what is normally one of the wettest parts of the year for California’s capital.

Slight chances of rain in recent weeks’ forecasts only mustered up to two days with trace amounts of precipitation on Feb. 22 and March 4.

Forecasts show rain will likely clear out by Tuesday night, then possibly return by Saturday, though amounts aren’t yet settled for the weekend system.

High temperatures hovering around 70 degrees this week will drop to about 65 by the weekend, according to the weather service.

What about snow?

Some Sierra snow is also expected Tuesday morning, with one to three inches forecast for elevations of about 7,000 feet.

South Lake Tahoe will see high temperatures near 50 degrees with overnight lows dropping to around 30 degrees most of this week.

At least two Tahoe-area ski resorts, Heavenly and Kirkwood, have extended their winter season.
