Time to shred: Major Tahoe ski resorts extend their winter seasons after snowstorms

Aided by some fresh powder in recent weeks, at least two major Tahoe-area ski resorts have extended their seasons.

Kirkwood will add three weeks, planning to stay open for skiing and snowboarding through May 1; and Heavenly will extend by one week, to April 24. Both properties, on the south side of Lake Tahoe, are owned by Vail Resorts.

Each date is subject to change if weather doesn’t cooperate.

Several other Sierra Nevada ski resorts, including Boreal and Soda Springs, plan to close April 17.

Palisades Tahoe and Alpine Meadows haven’t yet announced season end dates

Sugar Bowl Resort, on the north side of the lake, doesn’t have a set end date but says on its website that it will most likely stay open through mid-April.

One weekend only: Sierra-at-Tahoe reopens

Another major Tahoe resort, Sierra-at-Tahoe, has been closed all season due to damage sustained in last year’s Caldor Fire.

But Sierra-at-Tahoe recently announced it will be open one weekend only this season, on April 9 and April 10, to celebrate the resort’s 75th anniversary, according to its website.

Lift tickets for the special event will go on sale Wednesday. More details are available at sierraattahoe.com.
