Sacramento could break a more than 100-year-old heat record. Here’s when it will cool down
It is hot.
Sacramento hit 75 degrees before 9 a.m. Friday en route to a forecast high of 105, according to the National Weather Service. That would tie a June 10 record set more than a century ago, in 1918.
The weather service issued an excessive heat warning, in effect 11 a.m. Friday to 10 p.m. Saturday for the entire Sacramento Valley.
Sacramento County and the cities of Sacramento, Rancho Cordova and Elk Grove will open cooling centers Friday and Saturday, allowing respite for those experiencing homelessness.
Friday marks the expected crescendo of a three-day hot spell for Northern California. Downtown Sacramento topped out at 100 degrees Thursday, the weather service said, and is expected to reach low triple-digits again Saturday. The historic average for this time of year is about 88 degrees.
The heat wave will break after Saturday, cooling to an expected high of 86 degrees Sunday with forecast highs in the upper 80s to low 90s early next week near the capital.
Weather and emergency officials urge residents to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged outdoor activity. They also advise that though the air temperatures are hot, waterways like the American River continue to run cold and fast this time of year.
For those heading to Tahoe to escape the heat, daytime highs at South Lake Tahoe will cool from about 78 degrees Friday to 75 on Saturday and 63 degrees with breezy winds Sunday.
