Ironman California athletes will take their marks Sunday in downtown Sacramento for an 140.6-mile journey. Here’s how to take advantage of the triathlon coming to the state Capitol.


This time one year ago a “bomb cyclone” drenched Sacramento, canceling Ironman California and sending both disappointed athletes and spectators home.

This year’s weather forecast looks very different. Athletes will take their marks early Sunday morning under clear and sunny skies, according to the National Weather Service, with temperatures reaching a high of 70 degrees.

The ground may be wet with scattered leaves from Saturday’s possible rain showers and wind, but it’s not forecast to disrupt race day.

Here’s a look at Sacramento’s weekend forecast, as of Thursday morning, according to the National Weather Service. For up-to-date forecasts, check back at weather.gov:

Sunny with light wind.

Thursday night | Low of 54 degrees

Mostly clear with winds around 6 mph.

Saturday | High near 71 degrees

Partly sunny with a 20% chance of rain showers, plus winds up to 8 mph.
