San Francisco area marvels at rare snowfall, video shows
Video shows people enjoying, for the most part, a rare heavy snowfall in the San Francisco Bay Area as the newest winter storm pounded much of California and the U.S.
Hundreds of people headed out on slippery roads to drive up to Mount Tamalpais in Marin County and play in the snow, the Associated Press reported.
“We woke up at 4 a.m. and then drove up from San Francisco, a group of six of us, because we wanted to see the snow,” Shankar Krishnan, a San Francisco resident, told the AP. “It’s the first time I’ve seen snow in a long time. It’s like a winter wonderland. The trees are all frosty. There’s snow on the ground. There’s snow coming down from the sky. I saw somebody jump out of their car and they’re like, jumping up and down and cheering for snow. It’s beautiful out here.”
The National Weather Service warned of a “cold and dangerous winter storm” that will continue through Saturday.
Blizzard warnings were posted in the Sierra Nevada and Southern California mountain ranges, where as much as 5 feet of snow was expected.
Forecasts indicated snow could fall at the 500-foot level across portions of the Sacramento Valley. Snow was reported from Redding to Auburn to the Lake Tahoe area.
