Two more storms are headed for the Sacramento region. How long will rain last this time?
Two storms are expected to roll through the Sacramento region just in time for the Presidents Day holiday weekend, the National Weather Service forecast.
“Two storm systems will bring impactful weather this weekend through early next week with periods of moderate to heavy rain and mountain snow, gusty winds and isolated thunderstorms,” the weather service wrote in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Check the forecast and roads before you travel.”
In a separate post on X, the agency issued a winter weather advisory for Saturday and early Sunday and a winter storm watch for Sunday evening through Wednesday morning.
If you’re planning to travel for President’s Day, the service advises heading out between these storm systems sometime between late Sunday morning and Sunday afternoon.
How much rain could fall in Sacramento region?
For the first storm coming in, meteorologists are forecasting 0.5 to 1 inch of rain with localized flooding and slick roadways.
There will also be gusty winds with forecasts showing gusts of up to 30 mph in Sacramento.
It wasn’t clear as of midday Friday how much rain could fall during the second storm.
The South Lake Tahoe area can expect less than a half inch of new snow on Saturday during the day and night. The snow level may rise to 6,800 feet in the afternoon on Saturday and 6,900 feet on Sunday afternoon.
What’s in the weekend forecast?
Sacramento will experience a calm kickoff to the weekend on Friday with partly sunny skies and a 10% chance of rain after 5 a.m. Saturday, according to the latest National Weather Service forecast.
The high temperature will be near 62 degrees and the low temperature will be near 49 degrees for Friday.
On Saturday, there’s an 80% chance of rain during the day and a 90% chance of rain at night, the weather service said. Showers are expected after 11 a.m. on Saturday and again before 11 p.m.
Temperatures will reach a high of 59 degrees during the day with the low dipping to 52 degrees at night and gusts as high as 29 mph.
Precipitation totals are forecast between a tenth and a quarter of an inch during the day and a quarter and a half of an inch Saturday night.
Rain is expected to continue into Sunday with a 30% chance after 11 a.m. and a 90% chance at night.
The weather service issued a flood watch for the Sacramento Valley and foothills from Sunday afternoon into Wednesday morning.
Showers are expected before 11 p.m. with potential thunderstorms between 11 p.m. Sunday and 5 a.m., Monday. High will be near 66 with gusts of up to 26 mph and lows around 54.
There’s a 90% chance of rain on Monday with thunderstorms after 11 a.m. and possibly again before 11 p.m. Highs will be near 63 and lows will be around 51.
