Rain is returning to Sacramento with ‘chance of thunderstorms.’ How much will we get?

Get those umbrellas back out, Sacramento!

After a period of clear skies and seasonably warm weather, the capital region is expected to see some showers as March kicks off, the National Weather Service said. The wet weather could continue into the following week.

Scott Rowe, meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Sacramento office, said Sunday may be “showery.”

This weather system is coming from moisture in the north, so it is not expected to be as robust as storms fueled by atmospheric river systems in early February, Rowe said.

The weather service expects about a quarter to a third of an inch of precipitation during this short system, according to Rowe.

There is a chance of thunderstorms on Sunday, but Rowe said it was unclear as of Friday where thunder is most likely to appear.

“Thunderstorms require afternoon sunshine to get them bubbling and going, so we may not know (where thunderstorms could form) until the day of,” he said.

Here’s what you should know:

What’s in the weather forecast for Sacramento?

Sacramento was expected to be sunny and seasonably warm in Friday, according to the weather service’s latest seven-day forecast.

Rowe said Friday could be Sacramento’s warmest day of the year so far.

The high temperature on Friday was forecast to reach 75 degrees, while the low temperature was expected to drop to around 46 degrees overnight.

Saturday will have sunny skies with a high around 70 and a low near 49, the weather service said.

Chances of rain start after 10 p.m., with less than a tenth of an inch of rain expected overnight.

When will rain showers start?

Showers are likely on Sunday, with a 70% chance of precipitation during the day and 50% overnight into Monday, the weather service said.

Thunderstorms may be possible after 4 p.m.

Sunday will have a high of 59 with a low of 45.

Monday and Tuesday have a slight chance of showers during the day, with highs approaching 60 and lows in the mid-40s.

Chances of rain are forecast to ramp up again on Wednesday and Thursday.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center, most of California can expect below-normal temperatures and above-normal precipitation from March 8 through March 14.

Will the Sierra Nevada get snow?

The Sierra Nevada could get a few inches of snow during this system, according to Rowe.

He said areas along Interstates 80 and 50 can expect 5 to 8 inches of snowfall on Sunday.

The weather service advises travelers to monitor road condition information from CalTrans for any updates or road closures.
