Ready for more rain, Sacramento? Here’s when we could see showers, ‘isolated thunderstorms’

Rain is returning to the Sacramento region, along with cool temperatures and possible thunderstorms, according to the National Weather Service.

Meanwhile, snow showers are forecast for the Lake Tahoe area.

The Sacramento area could remain in a wet, “wintery” weather pattern through the middle of March, said Eric Kurth, a meteorologist with the weather service’s Sacramento office.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center, Northern California can expect below-normal temperatures and above-normal precipitation from March 11 through March 17.

Here’s what you can expect.

What’s in the weather forecast for Sacramento?

Sacramento was expected to be partly sunny on Tuesday, according to the weather service’s latest seven-day forecast. The high temperature will be 59 degrees, while the low temperature will be around 45 degrees.

Showers are expected to return to the Sacramento area after 4 p.m. Wednesday, with daytime and overnight rainfall totals of less than a quarter of an inch.

Wednesday was forecast to have a high of 59 with a low near 42.

There’s a 40% chance of rain on Thursday. The high will be around 56, with a low of 38.

How much rain could Sacramento get?

According to the weather service’s extended forecast, downtown Sacramento is expected to receive less than a quarter of an inch of rain on Wednesday and Thursday.

Kurth said a storm system from the south will begin in the San Joaquin Valley early Wednesday and become more widespread through the afternoon.

“Isolated thunderstorms” are possible Wednesday, he said.

The wet weather is expected to pause through the weekend, with another system forecast to bring more showers late on Sunday, according to Kurth.

Will the Sierra Nevada see more snow?

The mountains were expected to get snow showers Tuesday through Thursday.

On Monday, the weather service issued a winter weather advisory for much of the Sierra Nevada, including the greater Lake Tahoe area.

That will remain in effect from 4 a.m. Wednesday through 10 p.m. Thursday.

According to the advisory, areas at elevations below 7,000 feet could receive 2 to 6 inches of snow, while higher peaks might get up to a foot of snowfall.

Winds could gust up to 55 mph at higher elevations.

“Gusty winds could bring down tree branches,” the weather service said in its advisory.

Travelers should expect “slippery roads and chain conditions,” Kurth said.
