California under attack: A weak and failing Donald Trump seeks a punching bag | Opinion,” (sacbee.com, May 9)

To me, it’s obvious these raids at Home Depot and in the city’s garment district should not have occurred. This easily could have been my mother, working in a sewing factory, and my father, pushing a cart, selling vegetables — both children of immigrants who had to leave grade school to help support the family; yet four of their children have doctorates, and we have done much good in our world.

Trump’s strategic terminology

Gavin Newsom condemns National Guard deployment amid ICE raids, protests in LA,” (sacbee.com, May 8)

President Donald Trump has used the term “insurrection” to describe what is happening in Los Angeles. While there is no factual basis for this, from a rhetorical perspective, Trump’s terminology will make it easier to convince Americans that he should invoke the 1807 Insurrectionist Act.

If that happens, even peaceful resistance will become difficult, and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement will round up more people without due process, many who are legal citizens contributing financially and otherwise to their communities.

Double standard

Gavin Newsom condemns National Guard deployment amid ICE raids, protests in LA,” (sacbee.com, May 8)

Isn’t it ironic that President Donald Trump called out the National Guard to maintain law and order in Los Angeles? This is the same man who incited his followers to storm the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, and did not deploy the National Guard when he clearly should have.

Trump says the demonstrations in LA are an insurrection, but Jan. 6 was “a day of love.” Really? Anyone with two eyes and a modicum of objectivity can see through this.

The meaning of flags

The meaning of flags

A message to Trump protesters in California: Put down the Mexican flags | Opinion,” (sacbee.com, June 10)

Mike Madrid writes about Los Angeles protesters carrying the Mexican flag, saying “it only served to inflame a distressed public.”

As a U.S. veteran, it’s the Nazi flags and Confederate flags being carried by protesting citizens that inflame and distress me. In the past, President Donald Trump didn’t send in the military to quash protesters carrying Nazi flags and Confederate flags. In fact, he called them “good people.”
