Spencer Webb, a star football player from Sacramento who played tight end for the University of Oregon, died this week in a cliff-diving accident.

The accident happened at a popular swimming hole not far from the university’s Eugene, Oregon, campus.

Sacramento Bee sports writer Joe Davidson, who followed the athlete’s career for several years, remembers Webb in this video.

“He was a great football player,” Davidson said. “We could see that, but what really made him was that personality.”

Davidson said Webb overcame a rough childhood “and had every reason to veer off ... but he was hooked on football.”

After being recruited out of Christian Brothers High School in Sacramento, Webb became a fan favorite up in Oregon.
