The St. Louis Cardinals had a rude welcome for Giants starter Chris Heston, who hadn’t pitched in the majors in 13 days. The host Giants fell 7-5 and Monday begin a 10-day trip with three games against the division-leading Los Angeles Dodgers in a series that could be a huge factor in which team wins the National League West and reaches the playoffs.

A’s: Semien helps Oakland win in 11 innings

The A’s couldn’t hang onto the lead in the ninth inning, but shortstop Marcus Semien had a two-run single with the bases loaded in the 11th which was key in a 7-4 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks in Phoenix.

49ers: Two linebackers compete for Brooks’ starting spot

49ers coach Jim Tomsula said the team continues to take a “day-to-day” approach with outside linebacker Ahmad Brooks and that he is not expected to practice this week as the team prepares for the preseason finale Thursday. Brooks was charged with misdemeanor sexual battery and has been exiled by the team.

Tokyo trailed Lewisberry, Pa., 10-2 after one inning. Despite being down on the scoreboard, the Japanese team wasn’t feeling down. Instead, Japan mounted a huge rally and claimed the Little League World Series championship with an 18-11 victory.

River Cats: Eight-game trip ends with 1-7 record

The host Iowa Cubs reach starter Jake Dunning for 12 hits in 3 1/3 innings as the Cats fall 9-1 in Des Moines. The loss caps a rough eight-game trip that saw the River Cats win just once. The Cats begin a season-ending eight-game homestand Monday against Reno.
