Giants: Time is running out fast after loss to D-backs
The Giants continue to fade in the National League West after a 2-1 road loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks, who intentionally load the bases to get out of a seventh-inning jam. The Diamondbacks intentionally walk Buster Posey with runners on the corners to avoid facing the N.L.’s third-leading hitter. Randall Delgado got Angel Pagan to pop out to end the inning.
A’s: Manager Melvin agrees to two-year contract extension
The A’s announce they have agreed to terms with Bob Melvin on a two-year contract extension that will keep him as their manager through the 2018 season. General manager Billy Beane praises Melvin’s leadership during a trying season for the team.

49ers: Starters are fresh, but are they battle-tested?
49ers coach Jim Tomsula didn’t play any starters in the team’s final preseason game against the Chargers. He even held out some of the backups. He feels that practices – which are hidden from the prying eyes of upcoming opponents – are more valuable to prepare starters for the regular season.
High school football: Jesuit’s Bisharat a righteous runner
It will be easy to spot Jesuit running back Beau Bisharat in Saturday’s Holy Bowl (7 p.m., Hughes Stadium) against Christian Brothers. He’ll be the big, angry guy running over people.
