Prep football: Del Oro falls to Bellarmine

A week after losing to Hawaii powerhouse Punahou in the closing seconds at Cal, Bee No. 3-ranked Del Oro takes another frustrating loss on Friday, falling to Bay Area powerhouse Bellarmine of San Jose 34-31 late in Loomis in an inter-sectional game that could have CIF NorCal playoff implications in December.

Prep football: Whitney wins Quarry Bowl

It was supposed to be a Quarry Bowl shootout Friday with Rocklin Thunder quarterback William Floyd and favorite pass catcher Wesley Preece matching up against Whitney Wildcats signal caller Hunter Rodrigues and his trusty receiver Devin Brocchini. But Floyd and running back Evyn Holtz, along with several other players, were suspended for Friday’s seventh annual Quarry Bowl for breaking team rules. No. 8 Whitney takes advantage and upsets No. 5 Rocklin 28-20 in a nonconference game at Whitney.

Giants: Peavy, Giants rout Padres

Jake Peavy was surprised to learn he beat his former team for the first time. He had thought he earned one last season. “I guess that was a no-decision,” he said. “You know, I enjoy competing. I know a lot of people in that dugout. Other than that, it’s just another game.” Peavy allowed two hits over seven innings, Marlon Byrd had three hits and drove in a run and the Giants beat the San Diego Padres 9-1.
