Perhaps London Breed just isn’t a sports fan.
Friendly bets between elected officials are common, but the San Francisco mayor has seemingly avoided making a public bet with Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg on the first-round NBA playoff series between her hometown Golden State Warriors and the Kings.
Steinberg said he offered to bet Breed on the outcome of the best-of-seven series, but she didn’t bite.
Speaking on NBC Sports California’s pregame telecast Monday night before Game 2 at Golden 1 Center, Steinberg was asked if he and Breed had been trash-talking over the series or if any “friendly” wagers were made.
“Well, you know, we’ve been talking a little bit of trash,” Steinberg told NBC Sports’ Kyle Draper. “I actually challenged the mayor to a bet. I did.”
“Uh-oh. What you got for us?” Draper replied.
Steinberg said he was going to offer dinner at Mulvaney’s B&L in midtown or, worse, donning a Warriors jersey if the defending NBA champions took the series.
“But she didn’t want to do it,” Sacramento’s mayor said. “I’m not making any comment about, you know, about why, but I know I was willing to put up, you know.”
Breed has apparently avoided such friendly wagers in the past.
In January 2022, Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson offered some Dallas barbecue and humble pie if the Dallas Cowboys beat the San Francisco 49ers in their NFL wild-card matchup.
According to the Dallas Morning News, Breed didn’t respond, and it’s not clear if the Texas-style treats were ever delivered after the 49ers won the game, 23-17.
A spokesperson for Breed’s office did respond to questions Monday night.
