Source: 49ers to wear throwback uniforms in showdown with Seahawks
The 49ers will have a different look for Sunday’s pivotal showdown in Seattle.
Instead of wearing their standard road white jerseys with gold pants, the team will bring back their 1994 all-white throwback uniforms they last wore Oct. 27 against the Panthers, a source told The Bee.
Many players prefer the throwback look that features classic shadowed numbering and a black stripe down the side of the pants. The NFL in 2018 softened its rules allowing teams to wear alternate uniforms up to three times during the regular season. Sunday’s game would mark the second instance this year after the 49ers wore them during the 51-13 blowout of Carolina.
Given the importance of Sunday’s game against the Seahawks, team captains asked the organization to seek the league’s approval for the switch. The game will determine the winner of the NFC West and San Francisco would be awarded the No. 1 seed in the conference with a victory, which includes a first-round bye and home field advantage throughout the playoffs. The last six Super Bowl winners all had byes during the opening round.
A loss means the 49ers would have to travel to play the winner of the NFC East during Wild Card weekend. The Philadelphia Eagles would clinch the division with a victory Sunday over the New York Giants. The Dallas Cowboys would need to beat Washington and get the Eagles to lose for the division crown.
The 49ers haven’t won in Seattle since 2011 and are expecting one of the most hostile environments they’ve played in this season, rivaling that of New Orleans during their massive victory over the Saints earlier this month.
“I think level of intensity of these games is real,” quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo said Tuesday. “I think if you don’t know that going into it, you’re going to be in a bad spot.”
