Perry Fewell chooses Washington over 49ers
Perry Fewell, who interviewed for the position of 49ers defensive backs coach over the weekend, has chosen that position in Washington instead, a league source said.
Fewell spent the last six seasons as the Giants defensive coordinator and at one point was a hot name to become a head coach. Washington interviewed him for that spot last year but ultimately chose Jay Gruden instead. The 49ers were interested in Fewell in 2011 before Jim Harbaugh accepted the head-coaching position.
Fewell, 52, is from the east coast and since 1985 has coached on the east coast or the Midwest. His family is rooted in New Jersey area, which was a large factor in his thinking, the league source said.
The 49ers have filled a number of positions on Jim Tomsula’s staff. The spots that remain unfilled are: offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach, wide receivers coach, defensive line coach and secondary coach.
