Races and runs around the Sacramento area
Running for health and exercise is virtuous and all, but sometimes you just want to pin on a bib number and race against hundreds of others. Here’s our weekly best bet for races of various lengths and surfaces. No more excuses:
ROAD
Girls on the Run 5K
When: 9 a.m. May 16
Where: North Natomas Regional Park and Inderkum High School (2500 New Market Drive, Sacramento)
Cost: $30 through midnight Thursday ; $35 on race day
Reason for running: This all-female race is part of a program to inspire girls to exercise and be healthy. The emphasis here is on fun and camaraderie, but there no doubt will be some fast woman out there pushing the pace.

TRAIL
Coloma River Run 10 Mile, 10K, 5K
When: 8 a.m. May 16
Where: Lotus; Magnolia Parking Lot located off Highway 49 in the Cronan Ranch Trail Area
Cost: $50
Reason for running: In addition to supporting the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, this is a fun, challenging course along the little-traveled trails on the South Fork of the American River. As with any trail race, there will be some climbing, but here, it’s moderate.
