Two popular Tahoe ski resorts delay openings further, as weather stays a bit too warm

Heavenly and Northstar ski resorts near Lake Tahoe still have not rescheduled their season-opening dates, but announced Friday that they won’t begin in time for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

The two properties, operated by Vail Resorts, in statements earlier this week announced that they would not be able to begin the season this Friday as planned, due to warm weather.

Then on Friday, each resort said in updates to social media they will “be pushing our opening day back until after Thanksgiving weekend” as temperatures in the area still have not been cold enough to make ample snow.

“We’re bummed too, but we’re still hard at work, keeping a close eye on weather around the clock, ready to make snow every chance we can,” Northstar wrote in a Facebook post.

Both said they would share a new target opening date as soon as they can.

While the slopes remain closed, Heavenly says its gondola and Tamarack Lodge have opened, and that its “Heavenly Holidays” event will begin Nov. 26. Northstar Village will be open, and its holiday music events will begin Nov. 26.

Heavenly is near South Lake Tahoe, and Northstar is near Tahoe City on the north side of the lake.

National Weather Service forecasts show both areas will see high temperatures range from the 40s to low 50s through Thanksgiving, with lows near 30 degrees.
