Andrew Seng

Eppie’s Great Race held its 42nd event Saturday with a familiar face among its winners.

Overall winners in the multi-sport event were Vic Vicari, who won his 11th race, taking the top spot with a time of 1 hour, 49 minutes, 3 seconds in the Ironman. S A & J was the top three-member team and the Eppicureans took first in the four-member team event. Awards are given to the first, second and third place division winners.

The event, which features a 5.82-mile run, a 12.5-mile bike and a 6.35-mile paddle, attracted 1,300 participants, about 4,000 spectators and 1,000 volunteers Saturday, according to Drisha Leggitt, director of marketing. The contest is named after its creator, Eppie Johnson, Sacramento restaurateur. Johnson died in 2013.

Proceeds will go to the Sacramento County Therapeutic Recreation Services, and are expected to cover a third of the organization’s yearly budget, Leggitt said. The organization provides recreational activities and other services for children and adults with disabilities.
