Here’s where you can take a full-moon snowshoe hike on the shores of Lake Tahoe
Want to take a walk under the moon and the stars near Lake Tahoe? Here’s an opportunity you won’t want to pass up.
The Sierra State Parks Foundation announced it would offer beginner-level guided snowshoe tours at Sugar Pine Point State Park under the night sky along the western banks of the largest alpine lake in North America beginning in late January.
Interpreters will be leading what the foundation calls “full moon” guided tours to explore the cultural and natural history surrounding the Hellman-Ehrman Estate and the western shoreline of Tahoe around the state park.
The cost: $45 for adults and $25 for children 12 and under. The price includes snowshoe rentals, park entry fees, the guided hike and a beginner’s clinic. The beginner’s clinic begins at 6:30 p.m. on event nights before the hikes run from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
The dates are Jan. 27, Feb. 24, March 23 and April 20. Each tour will be limited to 50 participants and is expected to fill up quickly. Those interested can look for more information on the Sierra State Parks Foundation website.
The hikes begin near the restrooms on the day-use side of the park after taking the lakeside entrance on the east side of Highway 89. Sugar Pine Point State Park, near Tahoma, is roughly 20 minutes south of Tahoe City and 25 minutes north of Emerald Bay.
The foundation is encouraging ticket-buyers to stay up to date on road closures in the area by visiting Caltrans’ road conditions website. The events are subject to cancellation due to weather.
