“I just decided that, you know, doing live shows is really difficult and it takes up a big chunk of time every year,” Cassandra Peterson, 66, who grew up in Colorado Springs, told The Gazette. Her plans for the future include completing an autobiography and working on an animated series.
She told her mom at the age of 5 that she wanted to be the Queen of Halloween, and soon after “Movie Macabre” first aired in September 1981, her cult status took off.
She worried about her character’s popularity fading as her original fans grew older, but it has endured.
“Fans were getting older, as I was, and I was worried when they get old they’d not be interested,” Peterson told The Gazette. “Then something happened and the fan base began skewing younger and younger. I don’t know exactly how that happened but I’m very grateful for it.”
“I never dreamed in a million years that ... I’d be doing it 36 years later.”
Elvira’s last performance at Knott’s Berry Farm is Tuesday’s Halloween show.
