Latest Sierra storm puts Lake Tahoe ski resort at the 400-inch snowfall mark for season

Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows announced the ski resort hit the 400-inch mark of cumulative snowfall for the season.

Lake Tahoe area resorts reported as much as 8 inches of new snow Sunday night and Monday morning. Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows has received 403 inches of snowfall during the 2017-18 winter season - and counting. Heavenly recorded 7 inches of snow and the town of Kyburz saw 4 inches fall between 7 a.m. April 15 and 7 a.m. April 16. Mount Rose, near Reno, Nevada, accumulated a half-foot of new snow.

Some 227 inches of that snow, nearly 19 feet, came in March alone for Squaw Valley. Closing day at Squaw Valley is scheduled for Memorial Day, May 28. With weather and conditions permitting, skiers and snowboarders will have more than 40 days left to hit the slopes.

Chains or snow tires are required on a stretch of U.S. Interstate 80 and all the major Sierra highway passes through Monday.

The California Highway Patrol says chains or snow tires are required on about a 30-mile stretch of I-80 from the Donner Lake interchange just west of Truckee, California to the Kingvale exit in Placer County.

Meanwhile, pop-up showers and thunderstorms are in the forecast for the Sacramento area for Monday.
