In the biggest race of the night, El Dorado Hills Fire Department director John Hidahl defeated Assemblywoman Beth Gaines for El Dorado County supervisor.

With all precincts reporting, Hidahl won 57.5 percent of the roughtly 14,039 votes cast, while Gaines garnered just over 42 percent.

The District 1 contest, representing El Dorado Hills, featured some testy attacks. Gaines portrayed Hidahl as a fiscally irresponsible Democrat in a largely conservative county.

Hidahl said Gaines had only recently moved from Placer County to El Dorado County and that the Republican lawmaker has her eye on a state Senate seat down the road.

That seat is currently held by her husband, Ted Gaines, who won handily Tuesday but eventually will be termed out.

School board races

The El Dorado Union High School District has seen its share of controversy in recent years, most notably when Oak Ridge High School Principal Paul Burke was placed on administrative leave last year and ultimately fired this year.

A district consultant’s report said Burke frequently used profanity, periodically lost his temper and made derogatory remarks about teachers, parents and students.

The board race saw four candidates compete for two spots. Incumbents Lori Veerkamp and David Del Rio held onto their seats against challengers David Bicknell and Deloy Link.

In the Rescue Union School District, three candidates vied for two seats. Tagg Neal topped the results, winning nearly 37 percent of votes cast. Stephanie Kent and Serena Posner almost tied, with Posner winning 31.47 percent and Kent winning 31.33 percent.

Much of the county’s other action occurred in small special district races.
