Sacramento Valley stays dry as up to 6 inches of snow dusts mountains over weekend

Light showers sprinkled some much-needed snow over the Sierra Nevada this weekend as a weak system caught California’s northeastern border.

Most mountain passes were expected to get 1 to 3 inches of powder, according to the National Weather Service in Sacramento, but the Sierra Nevada Snow Report showed at least four ski resorts exceeded that amount. Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows led with 6 inches since Saturday morning, while Mammoth Mountain received 5 inches and Heavenly Mountain Resort and Northstar California each reported 4.

Virtually no precipitation fell on the rest of the state over the weekend, per the California Nevada River Forecast Center, and Sacramento’s dry spell continued into Tuesday with no end in sight.

Rain last fell in the Sacramento Valley on Jan. 25., and NWS forecasts show only a 5 percent chance for rain on any given day over the next week.

NWS predictions show Sacramento’s upper temperatures will be in the low 60s through next Monday, while lows could drop below 40 degrees. Wind is expected to register less than 15 mph.
