Humboldt County Correctional facility officials have released surveillance video showing an attack by inmates on a deputy inside the maximum security jail on Wednesday, August 9, 2017.
In the video, the deputy is conducting routine cell checks on the second tier when he is lured into a cell which housed two inmates. During the assault, Deputy Dillon Huffman was able to alert other correctional deputies of the assault in progress. The fight lasted for about 34 seconds until backup arrived.
Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal held a news conference on Friday to share details about a the assault, according to the North Coast Journal. Honsal called for more state resources in response to a surge in similar attacks since the 2013 passage of Assembly Bill 109.
In the video, Huffman can be seen entering the cell and then backing out again as the two men hit him with their fists.
The humboldt county jail recorded seven assaults on officers in 2013 and 2014 combined, KIEM 3 reported after the news conference. The television station said that number ballooned to thirty-six the following year, then twenty-seven in 2016. So far in 2017, inmates have assaulted officers twenty-two times. Four of those required hospitalization.
