Man, 56, found dead near tricycle in Roseville neighborhood identified

Police tape blocks entrance to a convenience store in San Luis Obispo County.

Authorities are investigating the suspicious death of a man found Tuesday morning beside an adult tricycle he was suspected of trying to steal in a Roseville neighborhood.

A resident in the 5000 block of Moonraker Lane discovered the unconscious 56-year-old man before 10:30 a.m. and called 911, the Roseville Police Department said in a statement. Officers found the man dead when they arrived.

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office, which operates the coroner’s division, identified the man as 56-year-old Troy Smithson.

The resident believed Smithson attempted to take the trike. Police said the man had no known ties to the neighborhood, and his vehicle was parked several blocks away.

No one witnessed Smithson’s death, prompting Roseville detectives to respond to the scene — standard procedure in unattended deaths, police said.

On Thursday, Roseville police said Smithson’s death was “deemed medical.”
