Possible explosive device disabled near Cal Expo

Sacramento police reported that a potentially explosive device in the American River Parkway southeast of Cal Expo was disabled.

Officers went to the parkway near the 500 block of Ethan Way about noon Monday on a report of a suspicious device, said Officer Matthew McPhail, police spokesman. Officers said they found what appeared to be a homemade destructive device near a bike trail.

The Police Department’s explosive ordnance team was summoned to disable the device, McPhail said.

He said it is not known how long the device had been there and the incident was under investigation. No arrests had been made.

Police and Sacramento County park rangers were in the parkway for about two hours to prevent bicyclists and pedestrians from entering the area, McPhail said.
