Rainbow crosswalks OK’d for Sacramento’s Lavender Heights
Sacramento’s Lavender Heights neighborhood is about to get a colorful signature project.
The City Council approved the construction Tuesday night of rainbow-colored crosswalks at the intersection of 20th and K streets in midtown. The rainbow design is a symbol of pride and history in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, and Lavender Heights is the center of that community in Sacramento.
The funding for the project will be raised by the Midtown Business Association and the Rainbow Chamber of Commerce. No money from the city’s general fund budget has been allocated for the work, according to a city of Sacramento staff report.
Many LGBT businesses are located near the intersection of 20th and K. The Sacramento LGBT Community Center is one block away.
