AM Alert: Jerry Brown swearing-in, State of State launch new year of California politics
Welcome back to California politics!
With the exception of a one-day ceremony elevating new members of the Legislature, the Capitol has been quiet for the last few months. Today it will be reanimated as we mark the ascendance of new statewide officials and the launch of a fresh legislative session. (To read about the fruits of the last session’s labors, click here).
Gov. Jerry Brown will be sworn in this morning to an unprecedented fourth term. He’ll deliver a combination inaugural address/State of the State speech as he enters his final stint after a resounding re-election victory and a still-overflowing campaign war chest he could now deploy elsewhere.
Brown will be addressing legislators in the Assembly chambers this morning and will hold a private reception – paid for by private donors – at the California State Railroad Museum tonight. Elsewhere, Sacramento will offer a cornucopia of freshly elected or re-elected officials taking office.
While you need an invitation to get into the swearing-in ceremonies, there are a couple of options for public celebration. The “People’s Inauguration Party,” sponsored by the Orange County Employees Association, runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the north lawn of the Capitol. Just like four years ago, there will be free hot dogs, chips and soft drinks.
And Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom will host an open reception in his Capitol office, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., with food provided by Plates Café and Catering, a program for formerly homeless mothers at Sacramento’s St. John’s Shelter for Women and Children.
Here’s a schedule of the invitation-only swearing-in ceremonies.
