Two people died, two others were injured and two juveniles were detained after an early morning crash Monday in Elk Grove, police said.

About 4 a.m., an officer noticed a suspicious vehicle on the eastern end of Brown Road, said Jason Jimenez, a spokesperson for the Elk Grove Police Department. As the officer approached, one of the three people in the Hyundai ran away, while the vehicle took off at a high speed westbound on Brown Road, Jimenez said.

The Hyundai crashed into a Tesla with four passengers at the Elk Grove Florin Road intersection with Brown Road, the western end of the street, Jimenez said.

Two of the Tesla’s passengers died at the scene, Jimenez said. The other two were taken to a hospital; their conditions are unknown.

The two juveniles inside the Hyundai were detained, Jimenez said. Officers are not currently searching for the third person, who fled the Hyundai previously.

After the crash, Elk Grove Florin Road was closed in both directions between Calvin Road and Heritage Hill Drive, according to a social media post from the Elk Grove Police Department.

The road was still closed as of 9:30 a.m. Monday, though Jimenez said he expected it to open by about 10 a.m.
