A beloved tradition returns to Folsom after more than 20 years: The cattle drive will make its way to Folsom’s historic district this summer.

The tradition will help launch the Folsom Pro Rodeo, according to Folsom Historic District Executive Director Judy Collinsworth, following the parade slated for 7 p.m. July 1.

“We’re bringing in 10 longhorns and 40 additional cattle, corralling them at the end of Sutter Street ... and then we have probably another 30 horseback riders guiding them down Sutter Street to make sure they don’t meander one way or another,” Collinsworth said.

There will be a small break between the parade and the cattle drive, which is expected to start around 8 p.m.

The longhorns are coming from Flying U Rodeo and the cattle are from rancher Reno Rosser, according to Collinsworth.

Folsom’s cattle drive is expected to last about 15 minutes, according to Collinsworth, who clarified the cattle drive has animals walking down Sutter Street rather than running.

The cattle drive ended because it previously took place earlier in the day when temperatures were warmer, according to Collinsworth. Although the program is slated for a later time this year, she said, it’s a one-time return.

“If it was more affordable, we would probably consider doing it every year, but it’s just one of those there we can’t do every year,” Collinsworth said. “This is special.”

This year’s cattle drive is part of celebrating the country’s 250th birthday, Folsom’s 80th anniversary and the rodeo’s 65th anniversary.

The cost of bringing the cattle is $20,000, Collinsworth said, which is being split between the Folsom Historic District and Choose Folsom.

A fundraiser is scheduled for 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the Folsom Hotel, 703 Sutter St. Guest bartenders will make drinks and the tips will go toward the cattle drive.Collinsworth said Monday night’s fundraising goal is $10,000.

The Folsom Pro Rodeo runs July 2 through July 4. More information and tickets are available at folsomprorodeo.com.
