12 train cars derail, one catches fire at Roseville rail yard; Foothill Blvd closed
A dozen Union Pacific rail cars derailed Sunday evening in Roseville, sparking a fire and prompting closures along Foothills Boulevard, officials said.
The derailment occurred around 6:15 p.m. near the Foothills Boulevard overcrossing and Dry Creek in the J.R. Davis Yard, according to UP and Roseville fire officials. The hump yard stretches about 2½ miles from the Antelope area of Sacramento County northeast into Placer County.
Roseville fire officials said in an update that at least 12 rail cars had gone off the tracks.
Two of the derailed cars caught fire but crews quickly extinguished the flames, Union Pacific said. No injuries were reported, and hazardous materials were not involved.
Roseville police shut down both directions of Foothills Boulevard between Cirby Way and Vineyard Road. The closure was expected to last for through at least 9 p.m.
Fire officials said there was no immediate threat to public safety as crews continued working at the scene.
The cause of the derailment was under investigation, a UP spokesperson said.
