Ukiah man killed in 3-car crash Friday on Interstate 5 near Woodland, CHP says
A Ukiah man was killed and a woman was seriously injured in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 5 near Woodland last Friday, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The driver of a 2015 Volkswagen suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene, on southbound Interstate 5 south of County Road 102, just before 4:30 p.m. Friday, the CHP Woodland office said Tuesday in a news release.
The Volkswagen was struck from behind by a 2020 Chevrolet, which, “for an unknown reason,” was unable to avoid the first vehicle in the fast lane, according to the CHP news release. The initial collision pushed the Volkswagen into a third vehicle, a 2020 Ford.
The Volkswagen’s driver, identified by the CHP only as a male from Ukiah was pronounced dead at the scene, and a 38-year-old Ukiah woman was taken to UC Davis Medical Center with injuries described as major. Two girls, ages 4 and 9, riding in the Volkswagen were transported as a precaution but were not injured, according to the collision report.
The Chevrolet driver received minor injuries and the Ford driver was unhurt, the CHP said. All five parties in the three vehicles were wearing seat belts.
The deceased victim’s identity will be released by the Yolo County Coroner’s Office.
The crash remains under investigation, but investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol played a factor in the crash, the CHP said. No arrests have been made as of Tuesday.
Anyone who may have witnessed the collision is asked to contact the CHP Woodland office at 530-662-4685.
