Survey: Do you want Sacramento outdoor dining parklets to stay?

Drinkers and diners enjoy service outdoors Friday, July 17, 2020, on the 1400 block of R Street, which was closed to vehicular traffic in downtown Sacramento. The closure was announced to give restaurants and bars the room to seat outdoors in adherence with part of the coronavirus prevention protocols.

Sacramento’s outdoor street dining program, which began during the pandemic to curb the spread of COVID-19, will expire in June.

Despite COVID-19 numbers going down, many residents “personally liked it” and were “so sad to see the outdoor dining option go” when they noticed Capitol Avenue’s street was wiped clean of its tented outdoor tables last week, according to a Reddit thread.

The intersection of 18th Street and Capitol Avenue is seen Friday, March 25, 2022, shows the area where parklets were stationed in front of Zocalo and Fieldwork Brewing Co. The outdoor on-street seating, which had been in place since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, were removed Thursday.

Those tents were taken down in a temporary measure, the director of the Handle District Seann Rooney previously told The Bee.

The City of Sacramento is requiring all parklets to come down by June 2022, when the temporary outdoor dining program, which was given the green light in May 2020, ends. And while city staff and restaurants are working on a permanent solution for the outdoor dining culture, it might not look the same.

As the outdoor street dining dismantle deadline approaches, The Sacramento Bee wants to know if you want outdoor street dining to stay, no matter COVID-19? Tell us in the survey below. This is not a scientific survey, it’s for fun! The survey closes on April 7.
