A new Hawaiian shave ice shop is arriving in Old Sacramento this week.

Ululani Hawaiian Shave Ice is opening on 1013 Second St. Thursday. The co-owners of the local franchise said the store will “bring a piece of Maui” to Sacramento.

“It’s a tourist place, the old district,” said co-owner Tammy Nguyen. “Many people are familiar with the brand, so I’m most excited about bringing that piece here.”

The shop will be run by Nguyen and Johnny Dang, both born and raised in Stockton. Dang, who has a background as an entrepreneur, said he first visited Ululani Hawaiian Shave Ice in Kihei, Hawaii. While eating the frosty treat with his friends, Dang said he thought: “wouldn’t it be nice if we had one back in Stockton?”

“To see so many smiles and conversations over something as simple as shaved ice, that’s something we wanted to bring to our own community back home,” Nguyen said.

The married couple brought the shave ice chain to Stockton in 2023. In an effort to expand further in the region, the two set up in Sacramento.

“We visited the old Sacramento district area, and quite frankly, we fell in love,” Nguyen said. “The area that actually reminded us of Lahaina in Hawaii.”

The shave ice shop features more than 50 all gluten-free syrups using pure cane sugar and fruit purees and juices, according to its website.

Popular flavors include the chain’s Sunset Beach, a passion fruit, orange, mango and guava mix or the No Ka Oi with mango, coconut and passion fruit.

Dang and Nguyen confirmed the store’s opening with The Sacramento Bee in 2025. The Sacramento shop will be the fifth in California and the 17th nationwide.

The business began in 2003 as a small operation, serving authentic Hawaiian shaved ice at community gatherings and private parties. Created by Ululani and David Yamashiro, the two opened their first brick-and-mortar location in Lahaina on the Hawaiian island of Maui, five years later, according to its website.

While the Sacramento shop’s grand opening is Saturday, it will hold a soft opening Thursday.

CEO David Yamashiro is excited about the venture into Sacramento, and he said the expansion has been met with enthusiasm by fans.

“The amount of feedback was tremendous, definitely way more than we’ve had in any of our other openings,” Yamashiro said. “The line is going to be long.”
